Annual Report 2006-2007

Goal 1: Recruitment, Membership and Leadership in the Profession

The Section has increased its exposure to peers by continually adding content to our Web site, circulating brochures and publishing an online newsletter. The MLA-CDS listserv is the main mode of communication between members. The Section’s officers will discuss at the next executive meeting the adoption of a wiki, blog and/or RSS feed on our Web site.

Membership chair, Ramune Kubilius, is stepping down at the annual conference after four years of welcoming new members to the Section. Ms. Kubilius brought her unique touch of making new members feel welcomed by announcing their names in the Section’s newsletter, assisting in the sign up for the MLA-CDS listserv, and answering questions about collection development. Furthermore, Ms. Kubilius always sent a reminder to those who forgot to renew their Section membership. She went over and beyond what was expected and the Section is truly grateful for her efforts. Susan Kendall will be taking over membership after volunteering for the Section in different capacities.

Melisa Nasea, Newsletter Editor, will be stepping down after five years to take over as Chair-Elect. Under Ms. Nasea direction, the newsletter, Developments, was published twice a year and always a pleasure to read. The Section appreciates her hard work and she is truly the force behind making Developments a success. The Section will be soliciting for a new editor at the annual conference.

Section Chair, Elizabeth Lorbeer, put a call out to members to consider volunteering for service positions. The article can be found in the spring issue (Vol. 19, no. 2) of Developments, http://colldev.mlanet.org/newsletter/index.html.

Goal 2: Life Long Learning

The Section contributed $750 towards the 4th International Conference on Evidence-based Library and Information Practice being held at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Several CDS members are part of the Scholarly Publishing Task Force Symposium being held at this year’s annual conference. The Section contributed $1,000 to support this event. Both Sylvia McAphee and Elizabeth Lorbeer volunteered to moderate the symposium’s blog at http://www.spt.mlanet.org/blog.

The Section is sponsoring/co-sponsoring three programs at the annual meeting. Chair-Elect, Lynn Fortney, was instrumental in obtaining Dr. Eugene Garfield to speak at our primary program, “Evaluative Measures for Resource Quality: Beyond the Impact Factor Primary.” The membership is excited that Dr. Garfield accepted our invitation. With the Hospital Library Section as lead section sponsor, CDS is assisting with a session entitled "Information Revolution - Improving the Face of Vendor Relationships/Revolutionizing Our Bonds" and co-sponsoring a contributed paper session with the Research Section entitled "Foundations of Health Information Behavior.”

Goal 3: Advocacy

Fern Cheek and Lynda Hartel, both of the Prior Health Sciences Library, Ohio State University-Columbus, were awarded the MLA 2007 Research, Development and Demonstration Project Grants. Ms. Hartel is the Secretary/Treasurer of the Collection Development Section.

The Section's Awards Committee announced the Daniel T. Richards Prize for 2007 is awarded to Carol M. Schisler for her paper "Evaluating Your Nursing Collection: A Quick Way to Preserve Nursing History in a Working Collection" which will be published in the July 2007 issue of the Journal of the Medical Library Association.

Esther Carrigan, AHIP, Medical Sciences Library, Texas A & M University–College Station has been awarded the 2007 Louise Darling Medal for Distinguished Achievement in Collection Development in the Health Sciences. She is a member of the Section.

I am pleased to report that our election results have been finalized and reported to MLA headquarters. The new CDS officers/representatives will assume their positions during the changeover of officers at the MLA meeting in Philadelphia; Melissa Nasea (Chair-Elect), Ramune Kubilius (representative-elect to Section Council), Susan Kendall (representative to MLA Membership Committee and chair of the CDS Membership Committee), and Deb Blecic (candidate for MLA Nominating Committee).

Goal 4: Creating and Communicating our Knowledge

The Section’s long term goal is to maintain a visible presence at the annual meetings. For 2007, this includes supporting three programs and a symposium. The Section communicates professional practices and shared experiences through its Web site, newsletter, and listserv.

Goal 5: Building a Network of Partners

The Section continues to engage in the debate of the Open Access movement, institutional repositories, and public access to clinical and consumer information. Most of our dialogues on the advocacy of these topics are shared on the MLA-CDS listserv and Web site. It is a shared goal amongst Section members to continue positive communication with our publishing partners in finding sustainable Open Access models.
