Message from the Chair-Elect / Program Committee Chair

The Collection Development Section will sponsor three programs at MLA 2008 in Chicago. Two of the programs focus on ethical issues and the third focuses on the changing roles of medical librarians.

The CDS is the sole sponsor of "Bridging the Library Ethics Gap: Conflict of Interest Concerns of Librarians." Although much has been said about possible conflicts of interest involving physicians, less concern has been expressed about possible conflicts of interest involving medical librarians. Some of these concerns involve vendor relations. Should librarians participate on editorial/advisory boards? Should librarians be concerned about attending vendor sponsored meals or parties?

The three speakers will be Joan Schuitema, Catalog Librarian, University Library, University of Illinois at Chicago; Dr. Andrew Robinson, Deputy Managing Director & Publishing Director, Medicine Wiley-Blackwell; and CDS member Jonathan Lord, Collection Development Librarian, Health Sciences Library, University of Virginia. The program will conclude with a question and answer session. This program may not produce a lot of answers. I will be very happy if it raises a lot of questions about ethical issues in the minds of medical librarians.

The Consumer and Patient Health Information Section will sponsor "Consent or Obedience? Medical Authority and Consumer Health Education: Bridging the Medical Ethics Gap". This program will discuss the ethics of research on medical authority and knowledge (e.g., how consumers use health information and the ethical implications of that). The secondary sponsors are the CDS and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered Health Science Librarians SIG.

The Technical Services Section will sponsor "Connecting to New Roles". This program will discuss staffing trends, the transition of staffing responsibilities, retraining issues, learning to use new technologies, and the connection to library services. The secondary sponsors are the CDS, the Public Services Section, and the Leadership and Management Section.

With three interesting programs the CDS will very visible at MLA in Chicago. We will also be very busy so please consider volunteering to help with the programs.

Melissa Nasea, Chair-Elect

From your Editor

I am Jeff Coghill, the new editor for Developments. Melissa Nasea had asked me to take over the duties as editor of the newsletter. I did so reluctantly—not because I didn’t want to work for the members of the Collection Development Section or MLA. Those who know me know that I have a hard time saying “no” to anything that involves contributing to the profession. I was reluctant because I’ve never edited any publication before. I’ve HAD editors who looked at my writing, but I’ve never been in charge of editing. And because of that fact, I ask your indulgence while I find out what this “editing thing” is all about.

Don’t be shy…we need your submissions. If it’s fit to be published, we want to know about it! We want your notices, announcements, article citations, awards, award announcements—anything that you would want to share with the other members of the section. As always, you can reach me by email: coghillj@ecu.edu. Or, “You can reach me by railway, you can reach me by trail way, you can reach me by airplane….” (My apologies to Oleta Adams).
