TITLE: Librarian/ Head, Content Management Faculty Position
LOCATION: Resources Division
SALARY: Minimum $49,000 Commensurate with Experience
POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: The Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HS/HSL), University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) seeks a knowledgeable, energetic, and creative Head of Content Management to manage the Library's print and digital assets. This librarian reports to the Associate Director for Resources.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The faculty librarian provides coordination and oversight of all facets of the growth and management of the Library's print and digital resources, including budget management, collection development, policies and standards oversight, acquisitions/digital access, intellectual organization, physical and data processing, maintenance, and use assessment. The librarian oversees the activities of the two departmental units - Monographs/Catalog Management and Serials/Digital Resources Management; supervises staff and mentors three division librarians; and plays an oversight role in the management of the departments' four Library technicians. As department head the faculty librarian collaborates with the Associate Director and division librarians to establish, implement and monitor the goals, tasks, policies, and procedures that relate to the Library's resources mission. This position collaborates with Library faculty to achieve established goals; leads collections activities; chairs the Collection Development Committee; serves as collection liaison to the campus and other library constituents; participates in strategic planning; serve on committees; works with colleagues at consortial, regional and national levels; and be active in the profession. The librarian is responsible for Library collection and other digital resources budget expenditures of over $1.5 million for print and online monographs and serials. The librarian plays a key role in the planning and oversight of collection evaluation; analysis and cancellation projects; and coordinates the compilation of data on cost, use, source, etc. This librarian works with others to effectively forecast collection needs and trends and participates on committees and is active professionally.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school with 3-5 years professional experience working in a collections or technical services role. Experience in budget management, supervision of staff, ability to analyze qualitative and quantitative data, be highly organized with excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills.
Preferred: Academic or health sciences library experience with strong service and leadership orientation; ability to work independently or as a team member; experience with Ex Libris' Aleph 500 integrated library system and bibliographic utility, ability to work in a high-demand, multi-tasking environment; knowledge of cataloging rules and standards and/or metadata; knowledge of issues relating to the transition from a print to a digital library collection; knowledge of current trends in scholarly publishing.

The HS/HSL is the second largest medical school library on the East Coast, providing access to 372,794 bound volumes, over 3,500 unique electronic and print periodicals, and 52 databases. Sixty-five FTEs and 25 faculty librarians staff the library. Our attractive facility, which opened in 1998, provides over 900 seats, 40 group study rooms, 130 individual study-carrels, 60 public-access computers, wireless Internet access, 3 computer classrooms, and a satellite conferencing center. The 190,000 square foot building also houses the Tower Café, the HS/HSL coffee lounge.
The Library supports the 5,600 students, and 2,045 faculty and staff members on UMB's 60-acre research and technology complex of 58 buildings including the University of Maryland Medical Center.
