"Fusing Cultures and Diversity Awareness in Library Collections" is the
theme of the program session being planned by the Federal Libraries
Section for the 2009 MLA meeting in Hawaii. Co-sponsors are the
Collection Development Section; the African American Medical Librarians
Alliance; the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered Health Sciences
Librarians <http://lgbt.mlanet.org/> SIG; and the Complementary and
Alternative Medicine <http://itsa.ucsf.edu/%7Edjowen/compsig.index.html>
SIG. The session is to be a combination of contributed and invited
papers on the subject of enhancing cultural diversity awareness through
collection development for staff development and patient education.
Speaker recommendations?
If you have suggestions for speakers we might invite to speak on this
subject, please contact me this week. We anticipate that many of the
members of our own section and the co-sponsoring sections/SIGs will have
papers to contribute on this topic - and we urge you to develop those
ideas now. The official call for papers will be posted on August 1, and
proposals will be due by Monday, October 6.
Call for abstract reviewers - Oct. 13-20
At this time we are in need of volunteers to review abstracts October
13-20. Timelines are very strict this year, so you should verify these
dates on your calendars to be sure you can be available during that
time. Reviewers will be named to the FLS Program Committee.
